What is the check engine light?
The check engine light is one of the vehicle's most important warning indicators. It is controlled by the engine control system and can illuminate when the computer detects a fault.
The warning does not identify the exact failed component by itself. A diagnostic scan is normally required to retrieve the stored trouble code.
A warning light is not the diagnosis
A check engine light can be caused by many different problems, including ignition faults, fuel-system problems, sensor failures, emissions faults, wiring problems, and communication issues.
The correct approach is to retrieve the diagnostic trouble code and then test the system involved.
Should you keep driving?
If the light is flashing, the engine is running badly, or the vehicle has lost significant power, stop driving when it is safe to do so and seek professional diagnosis.
