What does P0335 mean?

P0335 indicates a problem with the crankshaft position sensor circuit or the signal being received by the engine control system.

The crankshaft position signal is important because the engine control system uses it to determine crankshaft position and speed.

Common symptoms

  • Engine cranks but does not start
  • Intermittent starting problems
  • Engine stalling
  • Rough running
  • Loss of engine power
  • Check engine light
  • Tachometer behavior may change on some vehicles

Possible causes

  • Faulty crankshaft position sensor
  • Damaged sensor wiring
  • Poor electrical connection
  • Incorrect sensor power or ground
  • Damaged reluctor or trigger wheel
  • Incorrect sensor installation or air gap where applicable
  • Engine timing or mechanical problems
  • Control-module or circuit faults

How should P0335 be diagnosed?

The sensor should not automatically be replaced simply because P0335 is stored.

Depending on the vehicle design, diagnosis can include checking sensor power, ground, signal wiring, connector condition, live-data RPM during cranking, and the actual sensor waveform.

  • Inspect the sensor and connector
  • Check wiring continuity and condition
  • Verify power and ground where applicable
  • Check engine RPM data while cranking
  • Test the sensor signal
  • Inspect the trigger or reluctor system when necessary
  • Check for related timing or synchronization faults

Why P0335 can cause a no-start

If the engine control system cannot reliably determine crankshaft position and speed, it may not be able to correctly control ignition and fuel injection.

This is why a crankshaft-position problem can sometimes produce a crank-no-start condition.
